Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) are evidence-based treatments for mood and behavioral disorders.

CBT focuses on teaching your child about their thoughts, behaviors and feelings. The clinician helps the patient identify and challenge unhelpful thoughts and behaviors. As the patient develop coping strategies, unhelpful behaviors decrease while promoting healthier responses at home, school, and in social settings.

CBT sessions are structured, goal-oriented, and include skill-building for emotional regulation, problem-solving, and resilience. Sessions progress in manageable difficulty as skills develop to manage discomfort.

Exposure and response prevention therapy (ERP) is the process used to approach smaller manageable steps towards to clinical goal. The therapist guides the patient through each step while keeping anxiety at a manageable level.

ERP, a common component of CBT, focuses on confronting negative thoughts and resisting unhelpful behaviors. This approach empowers individuals to adopt effective coping strategies instead of avoiding anxiety-provoking situations.

CBT is especially beneficial for older children and teens. ERP is very effective for children and teens with anxiety as they climb their ‘hierarchy’ to reach their goals.

PCIT is conducted through didactic parent training and live coaching sessions through ‘bug-in-the-ear’ to provide live-in-the-moment coaching to the caregiver.

CBT is commonly used to treat:

  • Anxiety Disorders

  • Phobias

  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

  • Depression

  • Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)

  • Conduct Disorder

CBT is a highly studied treatment and has been for the benefit of many populations of children.

CBT techniques can be adapted to suit individual needs, with family involvement as necessary.

 Frequently Asked Questions

+ Does my child need a diagnosis to see you?

No, you do not need a diagnosis to come to treatment. In the clinic, we will assess your parent concerns and determine if a diagnosis is appropriate for your child. Regardless of diagnosis, many children struggle in very specific areas and benefit from the same research that guides clinical cases.

+ Can you diagnose Autism?

A full comprehensive assessment is needed for an appropriate diagnosis of Autism. It is very important to look at a behavior profile in multiple settings to determine function of behaviors. We would send you to a local partner for a full evaluation for Autism if there are symptoms of concern. We do treat behaviors that are associated with Autism. Our Director specializes in the treatment of co-occurring disorders involving developmental delays.

+ I know my child has selective mutism (SM) and we need intensive treatment. Can you help us?

Yes! I do offer intensive treatment for SM. Please reach out to schedule your 15 minute consult and we will get started with treatment. We will determine, together, if intensive treatment is to the benefit of your child and the timing of such an intervention together.

+ Are you doing SM Group Intensives?

Maybe summer 2023! Keep in touch.

+ Can I get help if my child is fine but I am uneasy?

YES! You deserve to feel like your parenting decisions are on solid ground. Eleanor also is the Founder and Director of a consulting company, Growing Minds Wellness & Consulting, that helps non-clinical families with just this! A little training can go a long way to organize your home and solidify parenting strategies. Reach out and we will make sure you end up in the BEST spot for your family.
